Munchi and “Munchaid”

Friday, March 4th, 2011

You need to know about Munchi.. Not because Diplo said so, although that is a very good indicator. You need to know about Munchi because he is brilliant.

A little over a year ago, 20 year old Rajiv Munch out of The Netherlands declared on Soundcloud that he would post one promo song every month, each from a different [Global Dance Music] genre. four months after that he would start posting “moombathon” promos, igniting a worldwide frenzy.

Munchi – Sandungueo (Moombahton) by Munchi

From what I understand, Moombathon is a new genre created by DJ Dave Nada, when he combined Reggaeton, and Dutch House.lol (Sounds vaguely like a moment of “Cheech & Chong” serendipity to me, but what the hell do I know?) It is some FUN party music, and it brings back the Reggaeton Riddim I love with some much needed VARIETY.

Munchi sent his promos, to Dave Nada on a whim, and by the end of 2010 he had toured extensively, and produced for MIA’s comeback mixtape effort “Vicki Leekz”. Blogs all over the world were hailing him as “the Next Diplo” and from what I understand he has been signed to Diplo’s Mad Decent label.

Recently I was in Hawaii and found a flyer for one of his appearances. I remember thinking … “Great how this kid is getting around”… He had done a wicked remix for me a few months before on Oi You Records.
(as yet unreleased) and we were due to share a bill in London.

Little did I know while I was in Hawaii, so was Munchi.. and what’s more he was stricken with a seizure. It caused a cerebral hemorhage (likely due to him hitting his head during the seizure). Munchi was in a coma for 9 hours and spent 11 days in the hospital.

The Global Bass Music community responded immediately, raising money so he could return home and to cover his medical bills,
